Sioux Falls man arrested in connection with Friday shooting at Empire Mall

Jaden Michael Justis Bingham charged with aggravated assault after shots fired during mall lockdown

SIOUX FALLS — An 18-year-old has been taken into custody after shots rang out inside the Empire Mall on Friday evening.

The Sioux Falls Police Department announced the arrest of 18-year-old Jaden Michael Justis Bingham, of Sioux Falls. He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and is currently being held in the Minnehaha County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, officers from the Sioux Falls Police Department, Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol were called to the Empire Mall for a report of an active shooter. In addition to uniformed officers, the Sioux Falls SWAT team and the department's Crisis Negotiation Unit responded to the scene.

Police responded to a report of an active shooter at the Empire Mall at approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday. No injuries have been reported.

According to Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum, two or three shots were fired outside Zumiez, a store just south of the mall's central corridor. Investigators located shell casings.

Police say when the shots rang out, multiple juveniles were seen fleeing from the scene. The mall quickly entered a shelter-in-place or lockdown, in line with emergency response protocols.

No injuries were reported.

More information is expected to be at the police department's regular Monday morning briefing.
