SIOUX FALLS — A Sioux Falls man facing first-degree murder charges has been apprehended by authorities more than 1,000 miles away from South Dakota.
The Sioux Falls Police Department announced the arrest of 28-year-old Lamont Burks Jr., who was wanted in connection to a late-August shooting that killed one and injured multiple.
According to Sgt. Cullen McClure, Burks Jr. was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon by law enforcement in South Carolina.
Burks Jr. is a Sioux Falls resident, but McClure did not share any detail about the arrest, including where in the Palmetto State he was located, whether he has relatives there, or how he arrived there. McClure also did not release any details or time frame for extradition.
Burks Jr. is the second suspect to be arrested in connection to the Aug. 25 shooting at Dunham Park. Another suspect, 32-year-old Walter Stewart, was taken into custody late last week.
Many details regarding the shooting have not become public, as police in Sioux Falls have repeatedly declined to release much information.
It is known, however, that a large group of individuals were gathered in the park's west parking lot when some sort of dispute broke out. At least two guns were used when four people were killed.
By the time police arrived, 29-year-old Joshua Antrell Allen Jr. had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead. A 27-year-old was also shot multiple times, a 40-year-old was shot in the face, and a 26-year-old was shot in the shoulder.
It's unclear whether additional suspects could face additional charges, as police have not yet concluded their investigation.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Burks Jr. and Stewart are the only suspects who have been charged. Both men face the same charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault.
The maximum sentence for first-degree murder, a Class A felony, is death.
McClure said more information is expected to be released at the Sioux Falls Police Department's upcoming media briefing.
